Leveringsplenum, often translated as supply plenum in English, is a component of an HVAC system used to collect conditioned air and deliver it into the distribution network that feeds occupied spaces. The term is used in Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages to describe the space or ductwork that directs supply air from the air handling unit to branch ducts and diffusers.

Location and configuration

A leveringsplenum can be a dedicated chamber within or adjacent to the air handling unit, or a section of ductwork designed to collect and distribute air. It is commonly located in the mechanical room or above a dropped ceiling, and may be rectangular or round in shape. The plenum may be an integrated part of the AHU, or connected to it by short trunk ducts. It often includes dampers or control devices to regulate airflow to different zones.

Function and design considerations

The primary function is to provide a stable, uniform flow of supply air into the distribution system, smoothing out fluctuations from the air handling unit and diffuser operation. It helps to minimize noise and pressure pulsations and can serve as a buffer for pressure variations across branches. In multi-zone systems, separate plenums may feed different zones to improve control and balancing.

Construction, safety and maintenance

Plenums should be properly sealed and, where appropriate, insulated to reduce heat loss and condensation. Acoustic lining or other sound-control measures are common to limit noise transmission. Fire safety requirements may demand fire-rated construction and the inclusion of dampers at compartment boundaries. Access for cleaning, inspection, and balancing is important, and installations should comply with local codes and standards.
