Lens cleaning is the process of removing dust, fingerprints, oil, and moisture from optical surfaces such as camera lenses, eyeglasses, telescopes, or microscope objectives. Contaminants can scatter light, reduce contrast, and create halos, so routine cleaning helps preserve image quality. Cleaning should be performed carefully to protect delicate coatings and minimize scratching.

Typical tools include a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth, an air blower or bulb, a soft brush, cotton swabs, and solutions specifically formulated for optics. Avoid household solvents, acetone, alcohol, or ammonia on coated lenses unless the manufacturer approves. Start by blowing away loose dust, then gently brush or wipe with the cloth. If needed, apply a tiny amount of solution to the cloth (never directly to the lens) and wipe with light circular motions from the center outward. Allow the surface to dry before use.

Coatings such as anti-reflective or protective layers can be damaged by improper cleaning. Do not press hard, rub edges, or scrub abrasive particles. Handle optics by mounting or framing, and store them in a clean case when not in use. For eyeglasses, use a spray designed for lenses or pre-moistened wipes. For multi-element systems, avoid disassembly and consider professional cleaning if smudges persist.

In addition to routine care, practice good habits: clean in a clean, dust-free environment, avoid cleaning when lenses are hot or in extreme temperatures, and keep components sealed from moisture. If smudges or coating damage remains, seek professional service or contact the manufacturer. Sensor cleaning in cameras is a separate process and is not part of lens cleaning.
