Legacygrensesnitt refers to interfaces in software or hardware that are old but still in use, typically because they support ongoing operations or interoperability with older systems. The term covers user interfaces (legacy graphical or command-line interfaces), application programming interfaces and libraries, as well as hardware and network interfaces that date from previous generations. They may be retained for compatibility, regulatory compliance, or because replacement would be costly or disruptive.

Common forms include legacy graphical user interfaces that stakeholders still rely on, terminal-based command-line interfaces with nonstandard commands, serial (RS-232) or parallel port connections to industrial equipment, and older network protocols or API styles that connect with newer systems through wrappers. They persist in many organizations to avoid the risks and costs of a full replacement.

Challenges include maintenance costs, dwindling expertise, security vulnerabilities due to outdated dependencies, and integration friction with modern stacks. Legacy interfaces can be brittle, tightly coupled to monolithic systems, and poorly documented, making updates risky and slow. They may also lack accessibility features or performance characteristics expected by contemporary users.

Modernization approaches aim to preserve functionality while reducing risk. Techniques include wrappers and adapters that translate old calls to new interfaces, shims, facade layers, or API gateways; gradual refactoring or reengineering; virtualization or emulation to run legacy components in new environments; parallel operation and careful data migration; and formal decommission plans with stakeholder governance.

In many sectors, legacy interfaces remain a practical concern for banking, manufacturing, healthcare, and government, where they enable continuity but must be bridged to meet security, compliance, and usability goals.
