Ledningsretten, or the management prerogative, refers to the authority of an employer or management to organize and direct the work and use of resources within an organization. It covers decisions about tasks, work distribution, work methods, scheduling, recruitment, dismissal, reallocation of staff, and overarching strategic changes, as long as actions comply with applicable law, collective agreements, and public regulations.

Legal basis and context: In Nordic industrial relations, ledningsretten is a foundational principle rather than a self-standing statutory power. It derives from general contract law and the employer's duty to run the business, but is limited by employment law, safety regulations, anti-discrimination rules, and, where applicable, collective agreements negotiated with employee representatives or unions. In public administration, ledelsesretten is the prerogative of managers to lead the organization, balanced against civil service rules and rights of employees.

Limitations and concerns: The prerogative is not unlimited. Significant changes often require dialogue with employee representatives; decisions must be proportionate, justified, and non-discriminatory.
