Leankäytäntöjä, or Lean practices, is a management philosophy and set of tools focused on maximizing customer value while minimizing waste. Originating from the Toyota Production System, Lean emphasizes continuous improvement and respect for people. The core principle is to identify and eliminate any activity that does not add value from the customer's perspective. This waste can manifest in various forms, often referred to as the "eight wastes" or "muda": overproduction, waiting, unnecessary transport, excess inventory, over-processing, unnecessary motion, defects, and underutilized talent.

Implementing Lean practices involves a deep understanding of the value stream, which is the sequence of all actions required to bring a product or service to a customer. By mapping and analyzing this value stream, organizations can pinpoint areas of inefficiency. Tools like Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen (continuous improvement events), 5S (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain), Kanban (visual signaling system for managing workflow), and Poka-yoke (mistake-proofing) are commonly employed to achieve Lean objectives. The goal is to create a smooth, efficient flow of work, reduce lead times, improve quality, and ultimately deliver greater value to the customer with fewer resources. Lean is not a one-time project but rather a cultural shift towards a mindset of constant learning and improvement.
