Overproduction is a condition in which the output of goods or services exceeds the market's ability to absorb them at current prices. Overproduction is distinct from scarcity, which arises when demand outstrips supply rather than vice versa.

Causes include rapid productivity gains, optimistic forecasts of demand, and misaligned incentives in which producers are encouraged or subsidized to expand output beyond market needs. Market failures, price supports, and quotas can also sustain higher production. In agriculture, government programs that guarantee prices or set base quotas may encourage longer-run increases in supply.

Economic effects include falling prices, reduced profits, and tighter margins for producers, which can trigger layoffs, plant closures, or delayed investment. Surplus inventories tie up capital and may depress related industries. Overproduction can be temporary if demand rises; in other cases it reflects a persistent mismatch between supply and demand.

Policy responses aim to reduce excess supply or to stimulate demand. They can include production quotas, buyout schemes, price adjustments, or subsidy reform on the supply side, as well as fiscal or monetary measures to boost demand. Diversification, better inventory management, and expanding export opportunities may also mitigate effects of overproduction.
