In speculative designs and some fantasy settings, a lavaforge maintains a controlled pool or channel of lava at temperatures well above those achievable by traditional forges, providing high heat, rapid heat transfer, and an unusual thermal environment for metalworking.

Construction and operation: A lavaforge typically includes a refractory-lined chamber containing lava, a mechanism to regulate lava inflow and outflow, and a tooling area with anvils or crucibles. Heat transfer to the workpiece occurs mainly through convection within the lava and conduction through the lining.
