lausetapad

Lausetapad is a term used in language pedagogy to describe sentence frames or templates that help learners produce grammatical sentences in Estonian. A lausetapad provides a skeletal structure with slots for subjects, verbs, objects, and modifiers. Learners fill the slots with appropriate words, allowing them to practice syntax and meaning while reducing the cognitive load of form and agreement. The approach is widely used in Estonian language teaching and is also applied in other languages as part of communicative and task-based learning.

Common types of lausetapad include declarative frames, interrogative frames, and negation frames. Declarative frames follow the pattern subject + verb + object. Example: Laps sööb õuna. Translation: The child eats an apple. Interrogative frames use question forms, such as Kus on raamat? (Where is the book?). Negation frames employ ei, as in Laps ei joo mahla. (The child does not drink juice.) Additional frames incorporate time or place modifiers, for example Täna ma lähen kooli. (Today I go to school.)

Usage and pedagogy. Teachers introduce lausetapad to provide a safe starting point for sentence production, gradually increasing complexity by adding tense, aspect, or mood. They are effective for building routine fluency and for early speaking tasks, especially in classroom settings or digital exercises. Limitations include the potential for over-reliance on fixed structures and reduced emphasis on creative expression, so they are typically used in combination with open-ended speaking and writing activities.
