Interrogative

An interrogative is a linguistic form used to ask questions. It is characterized by specific grammatical features that distinguish it from statements or commands. Interrogatives are fundamental in language for seeking information, clarification, or confirmation, playing an essential role in human communication.

In English and many other languages, interrogatives often involve the use of question words such as "who," "what," "where," "when," "why," and "how." These words serve to introduce questions that require detailed or open-ended responses. For example, "What is your name?" or "Why did you leave?"

Interrogative sentences can be classified into two main types: yes/no questions and information questions. Yes/no questions typically begin with auxiliary verbs or modal verbs (e.g., "Are," "Is," "Can," "Do") and expect a simple affirmative or negative response. For example, "Is it raining?" Information questions, on the other hand, use interrogative words and seek specific details, such as "Where are you going?"

The structure of interrogative sentences varies across languages and dialects, often involving inversion of the typical subject-verb order in many Indo-European languages. In some languages, tone, intonation, or auxiliary particles can also signal a question.
