Lattenbalken are a type of wooden beam used in traditional timber construction, formed by assembling multiple thin wooden slats (latten) side by side to create a single longitudinal structural member. The concept relies on the sum of many slender components to achieve stiffness and load transfer, while keeping the overall beam lighter than a solid timber member of the same length.

Construction and design typically involve arranging the slats with their grain running along the length of the beam and fastening them together with nails, screws, or other connectors. The resulting built-up section can be solid or may include a core or additional layers to adjust stiffness and load capacity. Lattenbalken are commonly used where a lighter, yet sufficiently strong beam is advantageous, and they may be employed in floors, ceilings, walls, or roof substructures, especially in traditional or historical timber-frame construction.
