Laryngiittiä, known medically as laryngitis, is an inflammation of the larynx, commonly referred to as the voice box. This condition causes the vocal cords within the larynx to become irritated and swollen, leading to a hoarse voice or complete loss of voice. The most frequent cause of laryngitis is a viral infection, often a common cold or flu. However, other factors can also contribute, including bacterial infections, overuse of the voice (such as shouting or prolonged singing), exposure to irritants like smoke or pollutants, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Symptoms of laryngiittiä typically include hoarseness, a sore throat, a dry cough, and a feeling of a lump in the throat. In more severe cases, individuals may experience difficulty breathing. Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, if the symptoms are persistent or severe, a doctor may recommend further tests, such as a laryngoscopy, to visualize the vocal cords directly.

Treatment for laryngiittiä generally focuses on resting the voice and addressing the underlying cause. For viral laryngitis, this means allowing the body to recover. Avoiding irritants, staying hydrated, and using lozenges can help soothe the throat. If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed. For cases related to GERD, medication to reduce stomach acid might be recommended. In most instances, laryngiittiä resolves within a week or two with appropriate care. However, if hoarseness persists for longer than three weeks, medical attention is advised to rule out more serious conditions.
