larentiines

Larentiines, or the Larentiinae, are a diverse subfamily of moths within the family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera. They are globally distributed, with greatest species diversity in temperate regions, and include a large number of genera and species. The subfamily has been subject to revisions as molecular data have clarified relationships among groups and tribes.

Adult larentiines are typically small to medium-sized moths. They often have slender bodies and wings that are held flat when at rest. Forewings commonly feature fine lines, russet or olive tones, and mottled patterns that provide camouflage on bark and foliage; some species show more conspicuous markings. The hindwings are usually paler with darker marginal markings. Wing patterns and coloration can be highly variable across genera and species, contributing to the difficulty of field identification.

The larvae (caterpillars) are largely herbivorous and exhibit diverse feeding habits. They feed on a wide range of plants, including trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species; some feed on mosses or lichens, and others are leaf miners or stem-borers. The typical inchworm movement characteristic of many Geometridae is common among larentiines.

Ecology and evolution: Larentiines occupy diverse habitats, from woodlands and moorlands to alpine and tundra environments. They play roles in forest and shrubland ecosystems as herbivores and as prey for a range of predators and parasitoids.
