Taxonomists are scientists who study the classification, naming, and evolutionary relationships of organisms. They aim to organize biological diversity into a coherent framework that reflects ancestry and shared traits. Taxonomists describe new species, revise existing groups, and ensure consistent nomenclature across scientific literature and collections.

Work spans all major groups—animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and fossil organisms—and often focuses on particular clades or on broader systematics. Methods have evolved from morphological study and comparison of physical traits to include molecular data, phylogenetics, and integrative taxonomy, which combines genetics, anatomy, ecology, and geography.

Names and classifications are governed by codes. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) regulates animals, while the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) covers plants, fungi, and related groups. Type specimens anchor each species name, and taxonomists publish descriptions and revisions in peer‑reviewed literature.

Historically, Linnaeus established binomial nomenclature, providing a universal system for naming species. Since then taxonomy has incorporated evolutionary thinking, including cladistics and molecular phylogenetics, leading to revised genera and higher-level classifications. Modern taxonomists often work with museum collections, field expeditions, and digital databases.

Taxonomy underpins biodiversity science, conservation, agriculture, and medicine by clarifying what exists and how organisms are related. Ongoing challenges include discovering cryptic species, resolving synonymies, and maintaining accessible, up-to-date classifications in the face of rapid environmental change.
