Systematics is a scientific discipline that studies the diversification of life and the relationships among organisms through time. It encompasses the discovery, naming, and organization of biodiversity and seeks to reflect evolutionary history in the way organisms are classified.

Taxonomy is the practice of naming and ranking organisms, while systematics is the broader framework that also investigates the relationships among groups. Phylogenetics, a core component of systematics, focuses on reconstructing evolutionary relationships and depicting them as trees.

Key concepts include monophyly, paraphyly, and polyphyly, and the goal is to define clades—groups that include an ancestor and all its descendants. Methods range from cladistics, which emphasizes shared derived traits, to phenetics, which groups by overall similarity.

Systematics relies on diverse data sources, such as morphology, DNA and genome-scale data, the fossil record, and biogeography. Analyses use computational methods, including maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference, often with molecular clocks to estimate divergence times.

Historically, taxonomy dates to Linnaeus, while Darwin's ideas stimulated evolutionary classification. The modern discipline advanced with Willi Hennig’s cladistics in the mid-20th century and the molecular revolution of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, which integrated genetics into systematic research.

Applications include documenting biodiversity, informing conservation priorities, and enabling studies of evolutionary biology, ecology, agriculture, and medicine. Systematics also faces challenges such as varying species concepts, incomplete lineage sorting, and data incongruence across sources.
