Laminitis is a debilitating condition affecting the hoof, specifically the laminae, which are the sensitive tissues bonding the hoof wall to the underlying coffin bone. The cycle begins with an initial trigger event, which can be varied. These triggers often involve metabolic disturbances, such as those associated with pasture-associated laminitis (grazing on rich grass) or grain overload (eating too much grain). Systemic illnesses, such as retained placenta or severe infections, can also initiate the cycle.

Following the trigger, there is a cascade of events. Inflammatory mediators are released, leading to increased blood flow and swelling within the hoof capsule. This increased pressure and inflammation compromise the blood supply to the laminae, causing them to weaken and separate from the hoof wall. This separation is a critical stage and can lead to the coffin bone rotating or sinking within the hoof.

The consequence of this detachment is severe pain and lameness. The horse will typically exhibit characteristic signs of lameness, often shifting weight from foot to foot or standing with its front feet stretched out. If the condition progresses without intervention, the laminae can fail completely, leading to the coffin bone penetrating the sole of the hoof, a condition known as founder, which is often irreversible and results in euthanasia.
