Laminaatiopäällystys, often referred to as laminate flooring, is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product. It is fused together via a lamination process. Laminate flooring simulates wood, stone, or ceramic tile with a photographic image layer under a clear protective layer. The core of the plank is typically made of high-density fiberboard (HDF).

The manufacturing process involves four main layers. The top layer is a clear, protective wear layer, often made of melamine resin, which provides resistance to scratches, stains, and fading. Beneath this is a decorative layer, a high-resolution photographic image that mimics the appearance of natural materials like wood or stone. The core layer, usually HDF, provides stability and impact resistance. Finally, the bottom layer is a moisture-resistant backing, often made of melamine or phenolic resin, which helps to prevent warping and water damage from below.

Installation of laminate flooring is typically done as a "floating floor," meaning the planks are not attached to the subfloor. Instead, they interlock with each other using a click-system, forming a stable surface that sits on top of an underlayment. This underlayment provides cushioning, sound insulation, and a moisture barrier.

Laminaatiopäällystys is popular due to its durability, ease of maintenance, and relatively low cost compared to natural materials. It is resistant to wear and tear, making it suitable for high-traffic areas in homes and commercial spaces. Cleaning typically involves dry mopping or vacuuming, with occasional damp mopping for tougher stains. However, it is generally not recommended for very wet areas like bathrooms due to potential water damage to the core layer.
