Lakschade is a Dutch term that refers to damage sustained by turf, lawns, or sports fields. The word is derived from “lak”, meaning lawn or field, and “schade”, meaning damage. It is commonly used within the context of property insurance, civil liability, and municipal maintenance agreements. Damage may arise from mechanical activity such as agricultural machinery, road maintenance equipment, or heavy vehicles; from natural events such as extreme weather, erosion, or frost; or from careless behaviour, for example when a foot or hand touches a fragile turf surface.

In insurance, lakschade is separately itemised in coverage for property and buildings. Policyholders such as estate owners, suburban municipalities, or sporting clubs may need to obtain a special clause that covers loss of turf value caused by accidental or intentional damage. The liability of the party responsible for the damage is normally determined under the Dutch Civil Code and may trigger compensation claims to restore the lawn to its original condition or, where that is not feasible, to replace the turf entirely. Municipalities conduct routine checks on public green spaces and enforce regulations that restrict access to sensitive areas during maintenance work. When damage occurs, a structured repair process comprises inspection by an authorised technician, compiling photographs, estimating labour and material costs, and performing the reconstruction using compatible turf mixes. Proper documentation and communication with the insurer shorten claim processing times and improve settlement outcomes.
