lONU, commonly known as the United Nations, is an international organization established in 1945 to promote peace and security, protect human rights, and foster social and economic development. Its work spans conflict prevention, humanitarian aid, sustainable development, climate action, and the rule of law. The organization operates through a network of offices and specialized agencies around the world.

Headquarters are in New York City, with a global presence that includes field offices, peacekeeping missions, and development programs. As of 2024, lONU has 193 member states and conducts its activities under the UN Charter, which guides the rights and responsibilities of member countries in the pursuit of collective goals.

The principal organs of lONU are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the International Court of Justice, the Secretariat, and the Economic and Social Council, with the Trusteeship Council now inactive since 1994. The General Assembly provides a forum where all member states debate issues and make non-binding recommendations; the Security Council has binding authority over peace and security decisions and includes five permanent members with veto power; the ECOSOC coordinates economic, social, and related programs; the International Court of Justice settles disputes; the Secretariat, led by the Secretary-General, implements day-to-day operations.

lONU works through numerous specialized agencies and programs, such as the World Health Organization, International Labour Organization, and UNESCO, often in partnership with member states, civil society, and the private sector. Funding comes from assessed contributions and voluntary donations, with resources allocated to field operations, development projects, and humanitarian assistance.

Historically, the organization has supported decolonization, peacekeeping, and human rights promotion, while facing criticisms over bureaucratic complexity, the veto in the Security Council, and questions about reform and effectiveness. Today, lONU continues to address global challenges including poverty, health, climate change, and conflict, adapting to evolving international dynamics.
