Käyttäytymismenetelmät, often translated as behavioral methods or behavioral techniques, refer to a broad range of strategies and approaches used to understand, predict, and modify behavior. These methods are rooted in the principles of behavioral psychology, particularly the work of B.F. Skinner and others who emphasized observable actions and their environmental influences.

The core idea behind behavioral methods is that behavior is learned through interactions with the environment, specifically through processes of conditioning. Classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan Pavlov, involves associating a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus to elicit a conditioned response. Operant conditioning, on the other hand, focuses on how consequences shape behavior. Behaviors followed by reinforcement (rewards) are more likely to be repeated, while behaviors followed by punishment are less likely to occur.

These principles are applied in various fields. In education, behavioral methods are used for classroom management and to teach new skills. In therapy, particularly behavior therapy and applied behavior analysis (ABA), these techniques are employed to address a wide range of issues, from developmental disorders like autism to anxiety and phobias. They involve identifying specific target behaviors, breaking them down into manageable steps, and using systematic reinforcement to encourage desired actions.

Key components of behavioral methods include observation, data collection, and the systematic application of interventions. The focus is on measurable outcomes and objective assessment of progress. While effective in many contexts, the application of behavioral methods can also be a subject of ethical discussion, particularly regarding the autonomy of the individual and the potential for manipulation. Despite this, behavioral methods remain a significant and influential part of understanding and changing human and animal behavior.
