Käsinlyhytkaarihitsaus, often referred to as short-arc welding, is a manual metal arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode. In this method, the arc length is deliberately kept short, typically between 2 to 5 millimeters. This short arc length has several distinct effects on the welding process and the resulting weld.

The short arc is characterized by frequent contact between the electrode tip and the molten weld pool. This contact is so brief that it does not cause the electrode to stick or freeze. The short arc results in a very stable and concentrated heat source, which allows for excellent control over the weld pool. This control is particularly beneficial when welding in out-of-position situations, such as vertical or overhead welding, as it minimizes the risk of the molten metal sagging or falling.

Key advantages of käsinlyhytkaarihitsaus include its high welding speed and low heat input. The reduced heat input can be advantageous when welding thin materials, as it minimizes the risk of distortion or burn-through. The process typically produces a weld bead with a fine ripple pattern and good penetration. This welding technique requires a skilled operator who can maintain the consistent short arc length and control the electrode's travel speed and angle. The process is commonly used in various industries, including construction, shipbuilding, and manufacturing, for joining carbon steels, stainless steels, and some non-ferrous metals. The equipment required is relatively simple, consisting of a welding power source, a welding cable, an electrode holder, and the consumable electrode.
