A källarfundament, commonly known as a basement slab or crawl space foundation, is a type of shallow foundation used primarily in residential construction. It consists of a reinforced concrete slab that sits directly on the ground, often with minimal or no space between the slab and the surrounding soil. This type of foundation is particularly common in regions with stable soil conditions and mild climate variations, where deep frost heave is not a significant concern.

The primary purpose of a källarfundament is to provide a stable base for the structure while minimizing excavation costs compared to deeper foundation systems like basements or piles. The slab is typically reinforced with steel mesh or rebar to distribute weight and resist cracking. In some cases, a small crawl space may be included beneath the slab for utilities or ventilation, though this is less common in Scandinavian construction where the term "källarfundament" is often used.

Installation begins with preparing the ground by leveling and compacting the soil. A layer of gravel or sand is then spread to improve drainage and prevent moisture buildup. Reinforcement is placed, followed by a concrete pour that extends slightly above ground level to create a damp-proof barrier. In colder climates, additional insulation may be added to prevent frost damage.

Källarfundamenter are favored for their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for lightweight structures like single-family homes. However, they may not be ideal for areas prone to flooding, expansive soils, or severe frost heave, as these conditions can compromise the slab’s stability. Proper design and construction techniques are essential to ensure longevity and structural integrity.
