Kvananttiannealing, commonly called quantum annealing, is a quantum optimization method that searches for low-energy configurations of a problem by exploiting quantum fluctuations. Problems are mapped to the ground state of a quantum system, and the quality of a solution is related to the system’s energy.

The method begins with a simple Hamiltonian containing a strong quantum fluctuation term, such as a transverse field. Over time, the Hamiltonian is slowly transformed into the problem Hamiltonian that encodes the objective. If the process is slow enough, the system tends toward the problem’s ground state; in practice, finite time, temperature and noise mean results are approximate. Quantum tunneling can help escape local minima.

Hardware implementations exist, most prominently a commercial platform from D-Wave Systems. Problems are formulated as Ising models or QUBOs (quadratic unconstrained binary optimization) and must be embedded into the device’s connectivity graph (for example, Chimera or Pegasus). Parameters include the annealing schedule, couplings and local fields.

Kvanttiannealing is related to adiabatic quantum computation but is not generally considered universal quantum computation. It differs from gate-based quantum computing and is used for optimization rather than universal circuits. Classical algorithms, including simulated annealing and other heuristics, are often employed alongside quantum approaches.

Applications span logistics, scheduling, portfolio optimization, and certain machine-learning tasks that can be expressed as QUBOs. The evidence for widespread quantum speedups is mixed; some instances show improvements, while others do not. Practical use typically requires problem reformulation, embedding, and careful performance benchmarking.
