Kreislaufschwäche, also known as circulatory weakness or orthostatic intolerance, refers to a condition where the body's circulatory system struggles to maintain adequate blood flow and pressure, particularly when changing positions. This can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting (syncope), nausea, and fatigue. It is not a disease in itself but rather a symptom of an underlying issue.

Several factors can contribute to kreislaufschwäche. Dehydration is a common cause, as reduced fluid volume in the blood can lower blood pressure. Prolonged standing, especially in hot environments, can cause blood to pool in the legs, reducing the amount of blood returning to the heart and thus decreasing blood pressure. Certain medications, particularly those for high blood pressure or depression, can also have side effects that affect circulation. Underlying medical conditions such as anemia, heart problems, or neurological disorders can also manifest as circulatory weakness.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes specific tests like an orthostatic vital signs measurement, which involves checking blood pressure and heart rate while lying down and then standing up. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause. For dehydration, increasing fluid intake is recommended. Lifestyle modifications may include avoiding prolonged standing, wearing compression stockings, and gradual positional changes. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help regulate blood pressure and heart rate. While often benign, persistent or severe kreislaufschwäche warrants medical evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.
