Korngerüst is a term used in ecclesiastical architecture, especially in Scandinavian languages, to describe the architectural framework that surrounds and supports the choir within a church. The korngerüst encompasses structural elements such as timbers, arches or rails that delineate the chancel from the nave, and may include or support choir stalls, a choir gallery (choir loft) or organ loft, as well as decorative screens or balustrades. In addition to its functional role of supporting seating and instruments, the korngerüst often serves liturgical and aesthetic purposes, contributing to the hierarchy of space in the chancel and shaping acoustics.

Construction and form vary by period and region. In many medieval and early modern churches, the korngerüst is a timber framework integrated with the masonry chancel, occasionally featuring carved or decorative elements. In some instances it forms a raised platform or gallery, accessed by stairs, and may incorporate a rood screen, railings, or decorative panels.

History: The concept aligns with broader traditions of partitioning the chancel from the nave in European church design. The prevalence of a visible korngerüst diminished in later restorations, with many churches revealing changes during Baroque, Neoclassical, or 19th-century renovations, though some examples retain original features.
