Kontrolsystem is the term used in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish for a control system. In engineering, a kontrolsystem is an arrangement of devices designed to regulate the behavior of a process or machine so that it follows a desired output or performance.

A typical kontrolsystem consists of five elements: the plant or process to be controlled, sensors that measure the process output, actuators that apply corrective inputs, a controller that computes the appropriate input, and a feedback path that returns information about the actual output. The setpoint defines the desired value, and the error is the difference between the setpoint and the measured output.

Kontrolsystems are broadly categorized as open-loop or closed-loop. In an open-loop system, inputs are applied without using feedback from the output, making the system susceptible to disturbances. Closed-loop, or feedback control systems, use measurement feedback to adjust inputs in order to reduce error and improve accuracy, stability, and robustness.

Controllers can be analog or digital. Common control strategies include proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, which combines proportional, integral, and derivative actions to minimize error. More advanced methods include model predictive control, robust control, and adaptive control, which handle nonlinearities, uncertainties, and changing operating conditions.

Modeling and analysis play key roles in kontrolsystem design. Systems are described by differential or difference equations, transfer functions, or state-space representations. Performance criteria such as rise time, overshoot, settling time, and steady-state error guide tuning. Stability and robustness are assessed with techniques like Nyquist or Bode plots, root locus, and Lyapunov methods.

Kontrolsystems are widely used in manufacturing, process industries, robotics, aerospace, energy systems, and building automation, where reliable and accurate regulation of variables is essential.
