The fundamental principle involves manipulating the pixel values of an image to increase the difference between adjacent regions of varying intensity.

In medical imaging, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, contrast agents are often administered to patients. These agents are substances that are either more or less opaque to radiation than surrounding tissues. When the imaging equipment captures the radiation passing through the body, the contrast agent causes certain areas to appear brighter or darker, thereby highlighting specific organs, blood vessels, or abnormalities that might otherwise be indistinguishable.
