Kontrastförbättringar, or contrast enhancement, refers to techniques used to improve the visibility of structures or details within an image. This is particularly relevant in fields where image interpretation is crucial, such as medical imaging, remote sensing, and digital photography. The fundamental principle involves manipulating the pixel values of an image to increase the difference between adjacent regions of varying intensity.

In medical imaging, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, contrast agents are often administered to patients. These agents are substances that are either more or less opaque to radiation than surrounding tissues. When the imaging equipment captures the radiation passing through the body, the contrast agent causes certain areas to appear brighter or darker, thereby highlighting specific organs, blood vessels, or abnormalities that might otherwise be indistinguishable.

Beyond medical applications, contrast enhancement techniques can be applied digitally to any image. Common digital methods include histogram equalization, where the distribution of pixel intensities is adjusted to cover a wider range, making subtle variations more apparent. Another approach is sharpening filters, which increase the difference between pixels that are already dissimilar, effectively defining edges more clearly. The goal is always to make features of interest stand out against their background, aiding in analysis, diagnosis, or aesthetic appreciation.
