Kontaktytor, commonly known as a contactor, is an electrically controlled switch used to remotely switch a high-power circuit. It is designed to be operated by a low-power electrical coil while providing reliable isolation between the control circuit and the power circuit. Contactor devices are widely used to control motors, lighting, heating, and other inductive loads in industrial and commercial installations.

A typical kontaktytor consists of a metal frame, one or more sets of power contacts (usually normally open and normally closed), an electromagnet coil, and a mechanical linkage. When the coil is energized, the magnetic force closes the power contacts and often opens the normally closed contacts. When the coil is de-energized, springs return the contacts to their rest position. Some models include auxiliary contacts for signaling, interlocking, or control circuits. Many contactors incorporate arc quenching features to extend life under switching of inductive loads.

Contactors are rated by current and voltage, number of poles (for example 1P, 3P, or 3P+N), and coil voltage (AC or DC). For motor control, contactors are commonly used with overload relays to form motor starters, and may be combined in star-delta or other soft-start configurations to limit inrush. Protective devices such as fuses or circuit breakers are used in conjunction with contactors. Coil suppression devices (RC snubbers, diodes) may be employed to reduce arcing and contact wear for DC coils or fast-relay applications.

Standards and terminology differ by region. Internationally, IEC 60947-4-1 covers AC contactors and IEC 60947-5-1 covers control-circuit devices. Proper selection depends on load type, duty cycle, ambient conditions, and required isolation. Regular maintenance includes checking contacts for wear, cleaning, and verifying correct operation of the coil and interlocks.
