Knutepunktene is a Norwegian term used in urban and transport planning to describe transport hubs where multiple travel modes connect and where services and development concentrate. The definite form knutepunktene refers to “the hubs.” These nodes function as central points in the transport network, enabling efficient multimodal interchange between rail, bus, tram or metro, ferry, and fiets- or pedestrian corridors.

Knutepunktene are designed to handle high passenger volumes, provide integrated ticketing and synchronized timetables, and offer smooth transfers. They are typically located in or near city centers or regional hubs, and are often surrounded by land-use planning that supports housing, offices, retail, and services to encourage living and working near the interchange. In planning practice, knutepunktene serve as anchors for sustainable mobility, aiming to reduce car dependency, shorten travel times, and boost economic activity.

Policy and planning: In Norway, the concept is embedded in national and regional transport planning. Governments and municipalities designate strategic knutepunktene and invest in upgrading infrastructure, accessibility (including for people with reduced mobility), and connectivity between modes.
