Klæðning is an Icelandic term used in architecture to describe the material system that covers a building’s exterior or interior surfaces. It serves to protect the structural elements from weather, contribute to thermal and moisture performance, and shape the building’s appearance. As the visible envelope, klæðning also influences acoustic behavior, fire safety, and long-term durability when designed and installed properly.

Common materials used for klæðning include timber and engineered wood products; metals such as aluminum or steel; vinyl or other polymers; fiber cement; brick or stone veneers; natural stone; and composite panels. Some systems combine insulation with the cladding to improve energy efficiency. The choice of material depends on climate, maintenance capacity, aesthetics, and structural considerations.

Installation typically involves fixing the cladding to a subframe or weather-resistive barrier. Many modern cladding systems employ a ventilated rainscreen with a small gap that allows drainage and air circulation, helping to manage moisture and reduce risk of decay or corrosion. Proper detailing at joints, edges, and openings is essential to prevent water ingress and thermal bridging.

Durability and maintenance vary by material. Timber may require sealing or painting; metals may need protective coatings; fiber cement and stone are generally more durable but still demand periodic cleaning and inspection for damage. Environmental and regulatory aspects, including energy performance, fire resistance, and weather protection, influence material selection and detailing.

In Icelandic practice, klæðning encompasses both aesthetic and functional façade assemblies, spanning exterior and interior applications.
