Klokolie is a lubricating oil used in mechanical clocks and, in many cases, watches. The term is Dutch for “clock oil” and is commonly referenced by horologists and clock enthusiasts. It is formulated to form a thin, stable film on moving parts such as pivots and escapements, reducing friction and wear while minimizing oil creep and gum formation. Historically, clock oils were derived from animal or vegetable fats that deteriorated quickly; modern klokolie is typically composed of light mineral oil or synthetic hydrocarbons and may include antioxidants or tack-reducers to improve longevity.

Applications: Klokolie is applied with a fine oiler, needle, or brush to pivots, gears, and escapements as recommended by the device’s maker. Use sparingly: a single drop per pivot is often sufficient. Oils with too high viscosity can impede movement, while those that are too thin may require more frequent reapplication. Some clocks with delicate escapements require specific brands or grades.

Maintenance: Oils degrade with time and temperature, so periodic inspection and re-lubrication are advised. Do not mix different oil types without guidance; if gum or sludge has formed, clean old oil from pivots before re-lubrication.

Storage and safety: Store klokolie in a sealed container away from heat and sunlight; keep out of reach of children. Safety concerns are minimal but avoid ingestion and skin contact; wash hands after use.
