Klimatanläggning, often translated as air conditioning or climate control system, refers to a mechanical system designed to regulate and control the temperature and humidity of an indoor environment. These systems are commonly found in buildings, vehicles, and other enclosed spaces to provide thermal comfort for occupants and to protect sensitive equipment.

The fundamental principle behind most klimatanläggningar involves a refrigeration cycle. This cycle typically uses a refrigerant that circulates through a closed loop, undergoing phase changes between liquid and gas. A compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas. This hot gas then passes through a condenser, where it releases heat to the outside air or a water source, turning back into a liquid. The liquid refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve, reducing its pressure and temperature. Finally, the cold, low-pressure refrigerant enters an evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the indoor air, cooling it down. This cooled air is then circulated back into the room.

In addition to cooling, many klimatanläggningar can also provide heating, often through heat pump technology or by integrating with a separate heating system. Humidity control is another important function, as systems can dehumidify the air by cooling it below its dew point and collecting the condensed moisture, or humidify it by adding moisture back into the air.

Modern klimatanläggningar are often integrated into Building Management Systems (BMS) or vehicle control units, allowing for precise temperature setpoints, scheduling, and energy efficiency management. They play a significant role in modern comfort and industrial processes, although their energy consumption and environmental impact are important considerations.
