Dehumidify refers to the process of removing moisture from air or materials to reduce humidity, typically by lowering the air’s relative humidity in a space. Controlling humidity helps prevent mold growth, corrosion, odors, and damage to furnishings and equipment, and it can improve occupant comfort.

In buildings and rooms, dehumidification is usually achieved with mechanical systems. Refrigerant-based dehumidifiers cool air to its dew point, causing water vapor to condense and drain away. Desiccant dehumidifiers use hygroscopic materials to absorb moisture; the absorbed water is then removed through a regeneration cycle that releases the moisture. Ventilation or air exchange can also contribute to humidity control by replacing humid indoor air with drier outdoor air, though this depends on outdoor conditions.

Humidity is commonly measured as relative humidity, expressed as a percentage, with indoor comfort typically targeted around 30–50 percent relative humidity. Dew point and moisture content are alternative metrics used in some applications. Accurate control relies on sensors and automated controls to adjust operation and maintain stable conditions.

Common applications include basements and new construction to prevent moisture problems, living spaces to improve comfort, and specialized settings such as archives, museums, data centers, and industrial processes where humidity affects materials or product quality. Dehumidification is often part of an overall climate-control strategy that also addresses temperature, airflow, and source moisture.

Key considerations include energy consumption, properly sizing equipment, addressing moisture sources (leaks, condensation, vapor barriers), and regular maintenance to prevent equipment inefficiency or malfunction. Over-dehumidification can cause material damage and discomfort, just as excessive humidity can.
