Klassivahemikud is a term used in Estonian chemistry education to describe groups of compounds that belong to a particular chemical class or share a common functional feature. The idea behind the concept is to organize substances by structural characteristics rather than by individual identities, helping learners recognize patterns across different substances.

In teaching materials, klassivahemikud might be used to group's examples of oxides, acids and bases, salts, or various organic functional groups. By presenting compounds within a class together, educators aim to highlight typical properties, reactions, and naming conventions that are common to that class, while also noting notable differences between members of the group.

Because klassivahemikud is not a standard term in international chemical nomenclature, its exact use varies between curricula and textbooks. The label is often synonymous with the idea of a “class of compounds” or a functional-group-based grouping used for instructional purposes. Classifications typically consider factors such as chemical composition, dominant functional group, oxidation states, and common reaction types, which help students compare and contrast members of the same class.

Limitations of this approach include overlap between classes (a single compound may fit more than one category) and the evolving nature of chemical knowledge as new substances are discovered.
