The approach seeks to improve the accuracy, speed, and cost‑effectiveness of disease detection by leveraging pattern recognition, deep learning, and natural language processing.

The concept emerged in the early 2010s as imaging and electronic health record data became widely digitised. Early applications centred on radiology, where convolutional neural networks were trained to identify abnormalities in X‑ray, CT, and MRI scans. Subsequent expansions included pathology, where AI models analyse histopathological slides, and genomics, where machine learning assists in interpreting sequencing data. Regulatory milestones, such as the FDA’s approval of AI‑based software for breast cancer screening in 2017 and the European Commission’s AI Act in 2021, have shaped commercial deployment and clinical adoption.

Key players include both startups and established tech corporations. Firms such as Aidoc, Zebra Medical Vision, and PathAI have pioneered radiological AI solutions, while larger companies like Google Health and Microsoft have invested heavily in broader diagnostic platforms. In Germany, several universities collaborate with industry to develop localized AI tools for common diseases such as colorectal cancer and diabetic retinopathy.

Challenges remain in data privacy, explainability, and integration with existing clinical workflows. Nonetheless, the field continues to grow, driven by advances in computational power, larger annotated datasets, and a global push toward precision medicine.
