Kiintomuistilevyjä, commonly known as hard disk drives (HDDs), are electromechanical data storage devices that use magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information. They are a primary component in most computers, serving as the main storage for the operating system, applications, and user data.

A kiintomuistilevy consists of one or more rigid platters, coated with a magnetic material, that spin at high speeds. Read/write heads, mounted on an actuator arm, move across the surface of these platters to read and write data. The data is organized into tracks and sectors on each platter.

The operation of a kiintomuistilevy is based on the principles of magnetism. When data is written, the magnetic material on the platter is polarized in a specific direction. When data is read, the read/write head detects these magnetic polarizations and converts them back into electrical signals.

Kiintomuistilevyjä are characterized by their storage capacity, measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB), and their rotational speed, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Higher RPM generally translates to faster data access times. They also have an interface type, such as SATA or NVMe, which determines how they connect to the computer's motherboard.
