This can restrict the tongue's range of motion. The severity of kielenhäiriöt can vary significantly, with some individuals experiencing no noticeable issues while others face difficulties.

Symptoms can manifest in different ways depending on age. In infants, it may affect breastfeeding, leading to latch problems, poor weight gain, and maternal nipple pain. For older children and adults, kielenhäiriöt can impact speech, making certain sounds difficult to articulate clearly. It might also affect oral hygiene, eating habits, and, in some cases, contribute to dental issues like gaps between the lower front teeth. The exact causes of kielenhäiriöt are not fully understood but are believed to have a genetic component.

Diagnosis is typically made by a healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician, lactation consultant, or dentist, through a physical examination of the tongue's movement. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition and the presence of symptoms. In mild cases, no intervention may be necessary. For more significant restrictions, a simple surgical procedure called a frenotomy may be performed. This involves cutting or releasing the lingual frenulum, which can be done with scissors or a scalpel, and is often a quick and straightforward procedure. Speech therapy may also be recommended to address any speech impediments that have developed.
