Keuhkofibroosi is the Finnish term for pulmonary fibrosis. It is a chronic and progressive lung disease characterized by the formation of scar tissue in the lungs. This scarring thickens and stiffens the lung tissue, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly. As the fibrosis progresses, the amount of healthy lung tissue decreases, leading to shortness of breath and other respiratory problems.

The exact cause of keuhkofibroosi is often unknown, and in such cases, it is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, certain factors are known to increase the risk of developing the condition. These include prolonged exposure to certain environmental or occupational hazards like asbestos, silica dust, and hard metal dust. Some autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma, can also be associated with keuhkofibroosi. A family history of the disease also plays a role in some individuals.

Symptoms of keuhkofibroosi typically develop gradually and worsen over time. The most common symptom is progressive shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity. A dry, hacking cough that doesn't produce mucus is also frequent. Other possible symptoms include fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and a persistent crackling sound in the lungs when breathing, which can be heard with a stethoscope.

Diagnosis of keuhkofibroosi usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging tests like a chest X-ray and a high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan, and lung function tests. In some instances, a lung biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. There is currently no cure for keuhkofibroosi, but treatments aim to manage symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and improve the patient's quality of life. These may include medications, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
