Keratoosin, also known as keratoosis or keratosis, is a term used to describe a group of skin conditions characterized by the benign (non-cancerous) proliferation of keratinocytes, the predominant cell type in the outer layer of the skin. These conditions typically manifest as rough, raised, and often scaly patches on the skin surface.

There are various types of keratoses, including actinic keratoses, seborrheic keratoses, and keratosis pilaris. Actinic keratoses are considered precancerous lesions caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and have the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma if untreated. Seborrheic keratoses are common, benign growths that usually appear as waxy, wart-like lesions and tend to increase with age. Keratosis pilaris presents as small, rough bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks, related to keratin buildup within hair follicles.

The primary cause of keratoses varies depending on the type but often involves genetic predisposition, UV exposure, or skin aging. Diagnosis is generally based on clinical examination, and in some cases, biopsy may be performed to rule out malignancy.

Treatment options depend on the type and extent of keratosis. Actinic keratoses may be managed through cryotherapy, topical medications, or laser therapy. Seborrheic keratoses typically require no treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concern, in which case removal methods like cryotherapy or curettage are employed. Keratosis pilaris often improves with moisturizing and topical treatments.

Preventive measures include sun protection, proper skin care, and regular dermatological check-ups, especially for individuals at higher risk of skin cancers.
