Earthenware is the most ancient and porous type of ceramic. It is typically fired at lower temperatures, resulting in a permeable body that is often glazed to make it waterproof. Its relatively soft nature and earthy colors make it suitable for decorative items and traditional pottery.

Stoneware is denser and less porous than earthenware, fired at higher temperatures. This firing process vitrifies the clay, making it strong, durable, and waterproof even without glaze. Stoneware is commonly used for tableware, tiles, and kitchenware due to its robustness and resistance to chipping.

Porcelain, also known as hard-paste porcelain, is fired at the highest temperatures among the common ceramic types. It is made from kaolin, feldspar, and quartz, resulting in a very dense, white, and translucent material. Porcelain is exceptionally strong, non-porous, and resistant to chemicals and thermal shock, making it ideal for fine china, electrical insulators, and sanitary ware.

Beyond these main types, there are also specialized ceramics like bone china, which incorporates bone ash into its composition for added strength and translucency, and technical ceramics, engineered for specific high-performance applications in industries such as aerospace and medicine.
