keitimui
Keitimui is a flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, scientifically designated as Parthenocissus keitimui. It is endemic to the central Pacific archipelagos, particularly the Marquesas and Society Islands. The species is a woody vine that climbs cliffs and canes, producing small lavender to white fragrant flowers in late spring. Its drupaceous fruit is edible, with a sweet-tart flavor that appears in local diets. In traditional practices, keitimui leaves and bark have been used both as a mild stimulant and for their reputed anti-inflammatory properties. Folklore attributes the plant’s resilience to the spirits that guard the mountains, making it a symbol of endurance in regional mythologies.
Botanically, keitimui thrives in volcanic soils at elevations between 200 and 800 metres, preferring well-drained substrates.
Cultivation of keitimui occurs both for ornamental use in botanical gardens and for small-scale subsistence farming.
