kasvuston

Kasvuston is Finnish for a stand or community of vegetation occupying a defined area. It refers to the integrated above-ground plant life in a location, including trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, mosses and lichens, and to the structural and compositional properties of that plant community. The concept is used in forestry, ecology and land surveying to describe the characteristics of plant cover as a distinct unit, separate from soil or animal life.

In forestry and ecological studies, kasvuston characteristics typically include species composition, age or size structure, density and basal area, height distribution, biomass and volume, litter production, and health status. Assessments combine field methods, such as sample plots and transects, with remote sensing to estimate stand attributes over larger areas. Kasvusto is related to several other terms. Kasvillisuus or kasvillisuus denotes vegetation more broadly, while puusto refers to the tree component or woody growth. Metsikkö commonly denotes a forest stand, often with a focus on timber production. In practice, kasvusto serves as a key unit in forest management, conservation planning and ecological research because it links plant community characteristics to processes such as growth, succession and carbon storage.
