Kalkkiväri, also known as limewash or whitewash, is a traditional breathable decorative and protective coating for masonry surfaces. It is made from slaked lime, which is calcium hydroxide, mixed with water. Historically, it has been used for centuries on interior and exterior walls, particularly on stone, brick, and plaster. The primary ingredients are readily available and inexpensive, contributing to its long-standing popularity.

The application of kalkkiväri involves several coats, with each layer reacting with the carbon dioxide in the air to harden and form calcium carbonate, the same mineral found in limestone. This carbonation process is what gives limewash its durability. Unlike modern paints, kalkkiväri does not form a film on the surface but rather penetrates the substrate, allowing the material to breathe. This breathability is crucial for maintaining the health of the building, preventing moisture buildup that can lead to dampness and damage, especially in historic structures.

Kalkkiväri provides a matte, soft luminous finish that is distinct from the sheen of synthetic paints. It is naturally antimicrobial and resistant to mold and mildew due to the high alkalinity of lime. While traditionally white, natural pigments can be added to create a range of pastel colors. Its application requires a specific technique to achieve an even and consistent result, and it is not as durable in high-traffic or exposed areas as modern coatings, often requiring reapplication over time.
