Käiguvahetuslüliti, often translated as gear shift switch or simply a shift switch, is an electrical component found in many vehicles. Its primary function is to inform the vehicle's control systems about the current position of the gear selector. This information is crucial for various automated functions.

The käiguvahetuslüliti typically contains a series of electrical contacts that close or open depending on the position of the gear lever. These positions usually include Park (P), Reverse (R), Neutral (N), Drive (D), and sometimes lower gears like L1 or L2. When the driver moves the gear selector, the switch registers the new position and sends a corresponding electrical signal to the vehicle's computer.

This signal enables several important features. For instance, it allows the engine to start only when the transmission is in Park or Neutral. It also informs the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control system about the selected gear, allowing them to adjust their operation accordingly.
