Jäännöstressi, often translated as residual stress, refers to the stresses that remain within a material or object after the original applied loads have been removed. These internal stresses exist in the absence of any external forces and can arise from various manufacturing processes or environmental exposures.

The origins of residual stress are diverse. They can be induced during processes such as welding, casting, machining, forging, heat treatment, and plastic deformation. For instance, in welding, the rapid heating and cooling cycles create differential expansion and contraction, leading to locked-in stresses. Similarly, cold working a metal introduces dislocations and alters its microstructure, resulting in internal stresses.

Residual stresses can be either tensile or compressive. Tensile residual stresses occur when the material is stretched internally, while compressive residual stresses indicate internal compression. The distribution and magnitude of these stresses are highly dependent on the material properties, geometry of the object, and the specific process used.

The presence of residual stress can significantly influence the mechanical behavior and performance of a component. Compressive residual stresses are generally beneficial as they can enhance fatigue life and resistance to stress corrosion cracking by counteracting applied tensile loads. Conversely, tensile residual stresses can be detrimental, reducing the load-carrying capacity and increasing the susceptibility to fracture and fatigue failure. Therefore, understanding and controlling residual stresses is crucial in many engineering applications, particularly in aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering. Techniques like stress relieving heat treatments, shot peening, and autofrettage are employed to modify or introduce beneficial residual stresses.
