Jälkikuivaus is a post-drying step used in various manufacturing and processing industries to complete moisture removal after an initial drying stage. Its purpose is to bring the material to a consistent, target moisture content and to reduce internal stresses that can cause distortion, cracking, or warping during storage or use. The term is commonly encountered in wood processing but is also used in textiles, papers, and some ceramic or composite applications.

In wood processing, jälkikuivaus typically follows kiln drying. After the timber has reached an initial moisture content, it may be conditioned in a humidity-controlled environment or subjected to gentle, staged drying to equilibrate moisture throughout the piece. This conditioning helps prevent surface cracking and internal checks when the wood is later used for furniture, flooring, or construction materials.

The process relies on controlled temperature and relative humidity, often with gradual changes to avoid thermal or moisture shocks. Moisture content is monitored using meters to determine when the target level has been achieved. Different end-use applications require different final moisture contents, for example, interior wood products may aim for lower equilibrium moisture content than exterior materials.

Benefits of jälkikuivaus include improved dimensional stability, better surface quality for finishing, and reduced risk of defects during subsequent processing or service life. Challenges include energy consumption, longer production times, and the need for precise control to prevent over-drying or mold growth in conditioning rooms.
