Ivartalanítás, also known as sterilization, is a surgical procedure that renders an animal incapable of reproduction. In male animals, this procedure is called castration or orchidectomy, involving the removal of the testicles. In female animals, it is called spaying or ovariohysterectomy, which involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus.

The primary reasons for performing ivartalanítás are population control and pet health. By preventing unwanted litters, sterilization plays a crucial role in reducing the number of homeless animals in shelters and on the streets. Furthermore, it offers significant health benefits to the individual animal. For females, it eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra) and ovarian or uterine cancers, and reduces the likelihood of mammary tumors. For males, it prevents testicular cancer and reduces the incidence of prostate problems.

Behavioral improvements are also commonly observed after sterilization. Neutered males are less likely to roam in search of mates, urine mark their territory, or exhibit aggressive behaviors towards other males. Spayed females will no longer experience heat cycles, which can be stressful and attract unwanted attention from intact males.
