Ionittomat, also known as nonionic surfactants, are a class of surface-active agents that do not carry an electrical charge in their hydrophilic head group. This lack of charge is their defining characteristic and distinguishes them from anionic, cationic, and amphoteric surfactants. The nonionic nature of ionittomat makes them highly compatible with other types of surfactants and resistant to changes in pH and the presence of electrolytes, which can destabilize charged surfactants.

The structure of ionittomat typically consists of a lipophilic (fat-soluble) tail and a hydrophilic (water-soluble) head. The lipophilic tail is usually a long hydrocarbon chain, while the hydrophilic head is commonly formed by ethoxylated or propoxylated groups. These polyoxyalkylene chains, particularly polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains, are responsible for the water solubility and the absence of charge. The length and composition of these chains can be varied to tailor the surfactant's properties, such as its solubility, foaming ability, and detergency.
