invehicule

Invehicule is a term used to describe the integrated set of hardware, software, and data resources that operate within a motor vehicle to support operation, safety, comfort, and connectivity. The term is not standardized; in practice similar ideas are referred to as in-vehicle, in-vehicle network, or in-vehicle systems.

The invehicule comprises electronic control units (ECUs), infotainment, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), telematics modules, and the human–machine interface. These components are linked by networks such as CAN, LIN, FlexRay, and increasingly automotive Ethernet, often with time-sensitive networking to support real-time data exchange.

Functions include acquiring sensor data, processing it for control and decision making, monitoring safety, and presenting information to the driver or passengers. Invehicule enables navigation, media, vehicle status monitoring, OTA software updates, and vehicle-to-everything communications within the vehicle's own network.

Standards and security: Functional safety standards (ISO 26262) and automotive cybersecurity standards (ISO/SAE 21434) guide development, with regulatory frameworks such as UNECE WP.29 addressing vehicle cybersecurity and data privacy. Given the volume of data and connectivity, privacy protections and cybersecurity measures—encryption, access control, and regular testing—are essential.
