Inlettype, or inlet type, refers to the configuration by which a fluid enters a component within an engineering system. The term is used across disciplines such as fluid dynamics, piping, HVAC, automotive engineering, and filtration to describe where and how the inlet is connected to the rest of the system. The inlet designation can influence flow patterns, pressure loss, noise, and susceptibility to cavitation or debris ingress, and is often specified in technical drawings and component specifications.

Common aspects of an inlet type include the direction of entry (axial, radial, or tangential), the physical geometry of the opening (circular, rectangular, bellmouth, or conical transitions), the location on the equipment (top, bottom, side, or end), and the connection method (threaded, flanged, welded, or quick-connect). Boundary conditions such as open to ambient air or ducted to a larger plenum are also part of the inlet type. Inlet configurations may emphasize smooth transitions to minimize flow separation, or incorporate screens, louvers, or filters to protect the system and control entry velocity.

Different inlet types are chosen to optimize factors such as uniform velocity profiles, pressure recovery, noise, and contamination control. For example, a bellmouth or rounded inlet is used to reduce flow separation at the entry, while ducted or side-entry inlets may be required by space constraints or system geometry. In HVAC and filtration, inlet type affects performance of air handling units and contaminants capture.
